As your trusted partner in renewable energy, McConnells harness decades of expertise in the mechanical and electrical sectors. Since our founding in 1991 by Patrick McConnell and David Miller in Newark, Nottinghamshire, we have been dedicated to innovation and customer satisfaction.
Today, we deliver state-of-the-art solar, battery storage, and heat pump systems tailored to the unique energy needs of both private homes and commercial enterprises — ensuring precision and reliability in every solution.
This is very much dependant on your energy usage and your property. In recent years panel efficiency has significantly improved so you will need fewer panels to achieve the same output. An average home consuming around 3,500 kWh per year might need around 3kW of power, which could be 6-8 panels.
Batteries are not necessary for solar panels to work but are becoming more popular as they enable you to store the electricity you generate rather than exporting it onto the national grid. Whether the battery makes sense for you depends on your energy usage pattern and the import/export electricity tariffs available to you.
Yes, with rising electricity costs and the advent of special solar electricity tariffs, solar panels can pay back their cost very quickly through reduced electricity bills and potential earnings from smart export schemes. The payback period can vary but is usually between 6 to 12 years, depending on your property. Commercial schemes can payback even more quickly.
While south-facing roofs are ideal in the UK because they receive the most sunlight throughout the day, east, west and even north-facing roofs can also be viable on the right property. For instance, an east-west configuration can create consistent and therefore more useful electricity through the day.
Yes, it’s possible to finance solar panels, batteries and heat pumps through a loan and use the savings to pay off the loan. Talk to us about finance but please be aware that lenders usually require that you can afford the repayments without any estimated savings.
Yes, modern heat pumps are designed to work efficiently even in cold climates. Air source heat pumps, can operate effectively at temperatures as low as -20°C. Of course, the efficiency may decrease as the outdoor temperature drops, but they remain a viable heating solution throughout the year in the UK. It’s also worth noting that air source heat pumps are extremely popular in Scandinavia where the climate is typically much colder than the UK.
Modern heat pumps are generally quiet. The level of noise depends on the model and the installation quality. Our residential units can operate from around 40 decibels, which is comparable to the noise level of library. As part of the surveying process, we ensure that the positioning of the heat pump will not unduly disturb you or your neighbours.
No, you do not need underfloor heating to have a heat pump, a heat pump can heat your home perfectly well and efficiently with conventional radiators. However, running the heat pump at a lower flow temperature will improve system efficiency and therefore we will assess your radiator system to ensure that it will work well with the heat pump, we will suggest any changes in advance of the installation.
New R290 heat pumps can comfortably heat your radiators as hot as a modern condensing boiler. However, we normally configure the heat pump to “weather compensate” which means when it’s milder outside your radiators will not be as hot, this improves system efficiency, saves you money and heats your home more comfortably. Having said this, maximum efficiency is gained through operation at temperatures lower than typical boiler temperatures, we can discuss these options with you.
While technically not always required we would usually recommend that any existing hot water cylinder is replaced with one more suited to heat pump flow temperatures and efficiencies. This will maximise both hot water recovery time and system efficiency.
Our heat pump installations are significantly more efficient than modern A+++ rated gas and oil boilers. Our design typically offers a coefficient of performance (COP) of around 3 to 4 (300-400% efficient), meaning they produce three to four times more energy in heat than they consume in electricity. In contrast, gas and oil boilers usually have an efficiency of about 90%, which means they convert 90% of the gas/oil into heat.
We are based in Newark in Nottinghamshire but we cover the whole of the East Midlands and beyond. This includes, Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. For larger commercial projects we are happy to travel further a field. Our Mechanical and Electrical Contracts division operates Nationally.
